26 Jun Dental Emergencies in Pets: What You Need to Know
At Veterinary Dental Specialists of Wisconsin, we understand that a pet dental emergency can happen without warning, and when it does, time matters. Whether it’s sudden trauma, a fractured jaw, or a rapidly growing oral mass, your pet’s comfort and health are our top priority.
What Counts as a Pet Dental Emergency?
Not all dental issues are urgent, but some situations require immediate evaluation and care. Here are some examples of true dental emergencies:
- Jaw Fractures: Often the result of trauma (such as a fall or being struck), jaw fractures can be extremely painful and may affect your pet’s ability to eat or breathe properly.
- Acute Facial or Oral Trauma: Injuries from dog fights, accidents, or hard object chewing can lead to broken teeth, bleeding, swelling, and exposed bone or roots.
- Bleeding from the Mouth: Continuous or unexplained bleeding may indicate a laceration, oral ulcer, or even a tumor that’s ruptured.
- Rapidly Growing Oral Masses: A lump or bump in the mouth that appears to grow quickly or begins to bleed can be a sign of a serious condition requiring urgent biopsy and evaluation.
- Broken or Displaced Teeth with Exposed Nerve: Teeth that break suddenly, especially with visible pulp (the pink/red tissue inside), can be intensely painful and prone to infection.
What Is Not an Immediate Pet Dental Emergency?
Some dental issues, while concerning, can often wait a few days for evaluation:
- Mild halitosis (bad breath)
- Gradual swelling or tooth discoloration
- Slight bleeding after chewing on a toy
- Tartar buildup or loose teeth in senior pets (unless actively painful or infected)
Still, these issues should not be ignored, but they may not require the same-day care.
